About the UH-HEART Program

Established in 2021 with funding from the American Heart Association (AHA), the University of Houston’s Houston Experience for Advancing Research and Training (UH-HEART) program engages motivated undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds across the country in meaningful cardiovascular research while preparing them for impactful careers in cardiovascular-related fields. UH-HEART is founded on the principle that excellence and innovation in cardiovascular science depend on the intentional inclusion and training of a diverse community of scholars, bringing together varied scientific interests, lived experiences, and perspectives. By fostering both scientific excellence and demographic diversity, the program cultivates an environment where creativity, collaboration, and transformative ideas can flourish.

UH-HEART offers a 10-week immersive summer research experience in state-of-the-art facilities under close mentorship from University of Houston faculty. Students gain hands-on experience across multiple areas of cardiovascular research while learning to articulate the significance, innovation, and real-world impact of their work. Individualized mentoring supports the development of strong research skills, professional confidence, and scientific identity. Complementing the research experience, students participate in structured workshops on ethical research conduct, laboratory methods, scientific communication, and career development, and complete an Individual Development Plan (IDP) to map pathways to graduate school, professional programs, or research careers.

Beyond the lab, UH-HEART emphasizes professional exposure and community building. Students attend and present at the AHA Basic Cardiovascular Science Scientific Sessions, engage in networking and peer-support activities, and conclude the program with capstone oral presentations.

Through inclusive training, mentorship, and innovative cardiovascular research, UH-HEART prepares the next generation of leaders in cardiovascular science.
