About the UH-CURE Program

Established in 2024 and funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the University of Houston (UH) Cardiovascular Undergraduate Research Experience (UH-CURE) program invites motivated undergraduate students from across the country to explore the full spectrum of cardiovascular research while preparing for impactful careers in science and medicine. UH-CURE is built on the belief that solving today's most pressing cardiovascular challenges requires researchers who can think and work across disciplinary boundaries. As a participant, you will gain hands-on experience across diverse research areas, from community engagement and population-based studies to basic, translational, and applied cardiovascular research, while emphasizing the significance, innovation, and real-world impact of your work.

UH-CURE offers a 10-week immersive summer research experience conducted in state-of-the-art facilities under the close mentorship of University of Houston faculty. Students are matched with diverse mentors who provide individualized guidance, fostering both scientific growth and professional confidence. In addition to conducting meaningful research, participants engage in structured workshops and training activities focused on responsible and ethical research practices, laboratory techniques, scientific communication, and career development. Students also create Individual Development Plans (IDPs) to clarify their goals and map pathways toward graduate school, professional programs, or research careers.

Beyond the laboratory, UH-CURE emphasizes professional exposure and community building. Participants attend and present their research at the American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Cardiovascular Science (BCVS) Scientific Sessions, gaining valuable experience sharing their work with the broader scientific community. Networking and social activities foster collaboration, peer support, and lasting professional connections, while end-of-summer oral presentations serve as a capstone opportunity to showcase research achievements and personal growth.

By offering a breadth of innovative cardiovascular research experiences and a strong foundation in transferable skills, UH-CURE prepares students to become the next generation of leaders in cardiovascular science. If you are eager to contribute to meaningful research, explore interdisciplinary approaches, and launch a successful career in cardiovascular research, UH-CURE is designed for you.

UH-CURE Cohorts

Participants in the UH-CURE program have progressed into research careers, pursued further education in graduate, medical, or pharmacy schools, and secured positions in academia and industry.
